BELLS OF KYOTO
Rail Studios in Konstanz was a meeting point of creative minds from
Southern Germany and East Switzerland. Lawrence Carls, himself an
excellent pianist, Alex Friedrich drums, Peter Drefahl bass and
Volker Zöbelin were, aside from their musical activities, all
co-founders and collaborators with Rail Studio. So in this new
constellation, Ollie Marland was invited to travel from London to
color Peter Waters' acoustic compositions with his inimitable and
imaginative electric keyboard and synthesizer sounds. Bells of Kyoto
was born.
In 1984 they started with the recordings for their album and it was
released in the same year. Asho II : while other songs, for instance
Temple and Swiss Air, are like Zen meditations sitting on the
beautiful Bodensee (lake of Konstanz), other works on the Bells of
Kyoto album appear with a strong dose of high jazz-rock energy. Asho
1 and 2 look for their basic instincts less towards the ancient
Japanese capital than towards the Middle East: Bells of Kyoto, a
unification of many worlds, a reservoir of world music. Asho II, in
particular, created as a Middle Eastern bass riff, becomes in the
masterful, magic hands of Ollie Marland, in collaboration with
Lawrence Carls, a virtual audio-construction live in the studio of
mosques and market-places, whether it be in Egypt, Iran, Istanbul or
Iraq.
The record and the sleeve are in mint- (M-) condition!
